A little history ...

Sottomarina, originally, was to appear as a thin strip of land, the coastal belt south of Laguna. Its structure has undergone substantial changes, especially since the eleventh century, changing gradually from vegetation "wilderness" to type "cultivated arrangements." Bounded on the South, from the mouth of the Brenta-Bacchiglione (port Brondolo), came north to the Port of St. Felix, the population was concentrated around the lagoon (or swamp) Lusenzo and was practically limited to the area from the old port to the current market. At the mouth of the harbor were two wooden towers, respectively, said the Wolf, and de Lion.

Following the total destruction in 1379 during the War of Chioggia , Sottomarina remained uninhabited, with no more sea defenses, subject to continual flooding. The same Senate will prevent the reconstruction, which will take place only towards the second half of 1600. In the following century, to defend the entire basin will be built the impressive work of Murazzi .

The city was once a thriving and active center , governed by his tribune and by its own laws. She was supported by a number of important churches (St. Martin, St. Anthony Abbot, St. Matthew), a Hospital and a castle with a tower, located in the homonymous island (Buoncastello). From here it was linked to Chioggia by a stone bridge for the canal Lusenzo reached the island of St. Dominico and Chioggia.

Over 5 and a half miles of beach, a width in some places exceeds 300 meters. His legend is not the oldest. Its territorial development is mainly due to the fortunate coincidence of two elements: the latest diversion of the Brenta from the lagoon occurred at the end of the last century, needed to avoid a complete burial and the now-compromised safety of its flora and fauna, and the danger of malaria, and the construction of the dam south of the port of Chioggia (St. Felice) , the work done in the mid 30's to protect the territory and the safety of vessels. Since then, the detritus of the river widened into consistent form the coast, a structural change in the country, with averages of three meters a year.
